Because of this, Yankovic and his writers struggled with developing content appropriate for children's programming that met CBS's expectations while still within Yankovic's form of visual and adult humor. Each episode starts with a narrator (Billy West) introducing today's lesson to the viewers. Then, Al is in a common situation in his cave dwelling that he addresses to the viewers.Afterward, he watches a TV displaying parody shows and commercials that are related to the day's show. Most of the time, Al's friend Bobby the Inquisitive Boy stops by and asks him a question. In turn, Al plays him an old-fashioned educational film (with the original dialogue replaced) to help answer his question.Sometimes, the show features an animated cartoon called "Fatman", which is about Weird Al as a fat superhero. At the end of the show, there is a commercial parody being shown followed by a band performing a song.The show had been pitched to Reed as similar to Pee-wee's Playhouse, but to have a more subversive humor that followed Yankovic's style of comedy. In fact, the kids in the show Corky, Lily and Benny kind of mirror my children…I came to this in a circuitous route in a way I came to weather in a circuitous route. I didn’t plan on being a TV weatherman.My dream job would have been to be an animator for Walt Disney in the heyday of The Little Mermaid and films like that. I’ve always loved that, but I’ve come to love weather, and I love my family. So, I was able to combine the three things I love into one show.Not only is there animation involved and storytelling, but there is a curriculum to make sure kids are getting the correct information they need to go ahead and be better human beings. There is also, in a sense, a safety aspect of it, of giving kids a safe space. To be able to work with PBS and do a show about weather.As an older guy, I remember when both animated shows and certainly sitcoms explained the premise of the show in the first 45 seconds with a great theme song. I wanted a theme song. Also, my father’s family is based in Senegal, so we wanted to have a feel of that in the opening.

I confess I was somewhat predisposed to like this show because I am very fond of both of the lead actors. Moreover, I have lived overseas, so some of the humor about cross-cultural differences resonated with me in a way it might not have for everyone who tuned into the United States of Al.Personally, I find the concept of this show appealing because it portrays a very plausible situation. Being able to look a the return of a soldier who served his country set up storylines that could both tickle your funny bone and pull at your heartstrings. Naturally, the inclusion of his one time translator opens up the fish out of water trope, as well as the possibility of some serious bromance. What remains to be seen is whether or not the writers can pull all that together into a funny package, while avoiding the pitfalls most Network sitcoms are falling prey to these days.If the creators of this show continue to focus on the human element, storytelling, and jokes, this could become something special. Alternately, if they go the preachy route, turning this into a vehicle to push their preferred political ideology, there will be no saving it.We enjoyed the 1st episode very much. All characters were pleasant. No idiots and No screeching or whining, like in so many series lately. Characters are well balanced in their presentation and social issue points are not shoved down your throats. Basically, a nice funny show.

So the affiliates that did air it showed it in dozens of different time slots. Also, it had to be rated as "educational programming" (the "EE" or whatever), so there was always some message.Although Al managed to pretty end up parodying that every week, too. The main problem was that folks probably didn't get it. Unlike Pee Wee Herman when Playhouse came out, Weird Al was already pretty well established. Those who didn't like him avoided the show, meaning it was basically his fans tuning in.It's somewhat like the show but with more polish and the skits are far less hit or miss.
